Jimmy Dobbins

Director, Data Science and Analytics

Jimmy leads big data processing, data visualization and statistical modeling efforts at FACTOR. He specializes in the use of data science and analysis tools that help FACTOR clients understand driving forces behind their risk and operational performance metrics. Bringing together sometimes disparate datasets can add understanding to operations and risk not always visible with standard reporting. Using insights derived from these techniques, clients may focus on areas that will have the most impact on risk reduction and operations improvement

Jimmy has over 22 years of maritime and transportation analysis experience. Jimmy was formerly at Ingram Barge Company, where he started the Business Intelligence and Analytics department in 2015 and served as a Data Scientist. Jimmy helped Ingram tackle big data problems and use data in unique and innovative ways to improve operational effectiveness, increase fuel efficiency, and reduce vessel maintenance costs. Prior to Ingram, he served as Director of the Vanderbilt Center for Transportation Research (VECTOR) and held an appointment as a Research Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Vanderbilt University. Jimmy’s research focused on freight data analysis, network optimization, transportation safety, and data visualization.

Jimmy holds certifications from Microsoft, Tableau, and Oracle and has extensive experience with numerous data and big data platforms and machine learning tools. He served 18 years as a commissioned officer in the US Naval Reserve, and holds a dual license of 3rd Assistant Engineer, oceans, unlimited horsepower and 3rd Mate, oceans, unlimited tonnage. Jimmy is a member and communications chair of the TRB AW040 Standing Committee on Marine Safety and Human Factors member (2011-present).
