Preventing Vessel/Platform Collisions in the Open Sea

Our client utilizes this sophisticated tool as part of their system for calculating vessel collision risk frequencies on the UK and Norwegian Continental Shelf. Their methodology has become the industry standard.

FACTOR was engaged to develop a sophisticated vessel and offshore platform collision risk assessment tool for a Norwegian client. The tool leverages Automatic Identification System (AIS)-based vessel data analysis for the oil and gas industry and analyzes vessel traffic patterns to derive probabilistic traffic distribution and lanes. The locations and orientations of offshore structures and infrastructure, above and below water, are used to estimate collision risk from vessels.

Vessel Traffic Studies

The tool allows the client to perform vessel traffic studies, analyze complex supply vessel movements, and calculate a suite of risk metrics to better understand how platform placement affects collision risk.

AIS Data

Vessel traffic data (referred to as Automatic Identification System (AIS) data) are collected from transceivers on each vessel and are often used in collision-avoidance systems. Both radar and satellite receivers are used to gather this data.
