Emergency Response Planning Advances Nuclear Power Safety

Advance visualization of impacts from an accidental radioactive release at nuclear power plant allows for preparation of site specific response actions.

FACTOR integrated radiological plume model results into our custom operations support system to enhance the visualization of potentially impacted areas during nuclear facility emergencies. The system provides tools and automation functions to assist with emergency operations involving radiological plume overlay selection and orientation, emergency response planning areas, protective action recommendations, display of evacuation time estimates, map presentation of traffic management plans, and the development and display of critical radiological emergency planning data requirements to include: response resources, emergency reception centers, and siren route alerting. The system is in use in the Emergency Operations Center and by the state and county governments surrounding the facility.

FACTOR also developed an analytical framework and methodology to assess sound pressure level coverage areas and population exposure affected by emergency alert sirens. FACTOR developed solutions to address how variations in topographical features, vegetation, and building density can have significant impacts upon the effectiveness of siren alerts.

Emergency Siren Alert Plan

Advanced plume modeling, system integration, risk communication, and real-time emergency drill support were key elements in the development of a siren implementation and positioning plan and led to the successful approval by FEMA of the emergency siren alert plan for the nuclear power operator.

Who We Work With

The emergency management/plume visualization system was developed for a nuclear power plant operator and closely coordinated with the state’s Emergency Management Office and various county governments.

MIDAS Dose Assessment Model

This Meteorological Information and Dose Assessment System (MIDAS) is developed by ABS Consulting for nuclear power plants. It models the atmospheric dispersion, in three dimensions, from both accident and non-accident releases.
